Kepala Perwakilan Program Moon Village ESA, Bernard Foing, memperkirakan dalam waktu kurang dari 25 tahun, seratus manusia akan bermukim di Bulan.
“Desa berbasis di Bulan bisa terwujud berkat teknologi percetakan 3D dan tanaman yang ditanam di sana,” kata dia. Selain itu, menurut Foing, peneliti bisa mencairkan es untuk sumber air.
Proses koloni dimulai dari sepuluh perintis yang mengawali membuat desa, kemudian memperbanyak keturunan hingga seratus orang.
Para ilmuwan juga mulai mencicil menumbuhkan tanaman. Rencananya, enam atau sepuluh perintis berangkat pada 2030, terdiri dari ilmuwan, teknisi dan insinyur.
Kemudian bisa berkembang biak hingga 100 orang pada 2040. “Jadi, pada tahun 2050, bisa sampai seribu dan seterusnya, tentu saja Anda bisa membayangkan memiliki keluarga di Bulan,” ungkap Foing.
Gagasan ini juga didukung oleh faktor bulan akan dijadikan pengganti Stasiun Antariksa Internasional (ISS), yang akan ditutup pada 2024.
Namun, untuk mengirim orang dan peralatan ke bulan jauh lebih berisiko dan lebih mahal daripada hanya mengirim manusia ke
ISS.
Para ahli meyakini, agar mimpi terwujud, maka ESA dan Badan Antariksa Amerika Serikat, NASA, harus menggandeng perusahaan teknologi swasta seperti SpaceX dan Blue Origin.
