Tim dokter dari Dinas Kesehatan Inggris menyarankan agar tidak ada orang yang berusaha menahan bersinnya. Saran tersebut muncul usai seorang pria berusia 34 tahun asal Inggris mengalami gangguan tenggorokan serius akibat menahan bersin.
Beberapa saat usai pria tersebut menahan bersin, dia mulai kesulitan bicara, sulit menelan bahkan mengalami pembengkakan pada tenggorokan.
Saat tim dokter memeriksanya, ada suara berderak yang terdengar dari belakang leher yang kemudian meluas sampai pada tulang rusuk pria tersebut.
Hal tersebut adalah tanda adanya gelembung udara yang menyebar ke jaringan dalam serta otot dada, yang telah dikonfirmasi oleh pemindaian tomografi.
Akibat risiko komplikasi serius, pria tersebut harus dirawat di rumah sakit selama tujuh hari sampai dirinya dapat pulih kembali.
Memang untuk gangguan tenggorokan belakang yang diakibatkan bersin itu jarang terjadi. Umumnya, kondisi tersebut diakibatkan oleh trauma benturan, muntah ataupun batuk berat, maka dari itu gejala awalnya cukup membuat dokter perawatan darurat terkejut.
Menutup Lubang Hidung
Tim medis pun mengingatkan pasiennya agar tidak lagi menahan bersin dengan menutup kedua lubang hidung bersamaan.
Beberapa risiko yang dapat terjadi akibat hal tersebut yaitu pseudomediastinum atau udara yang terperangkap pada dada antara kedua paru-paru serta perforasi di membran timpani.
